Re: Usb wifi adapter for OSX?

Thankyou all for your kind replies. :)

I have a netgear WG111v2 which, according to netgear's website, should work with osx.
Apart from this one, I've seen the EDIMAX Power USB EW-7318USg and the Asus WL167g, I've heard that those dongs  work fine.

Edit: I've seen some videos on disassembling netbooks, and in some of them I've seen that one has to remove the plastic part around the monitor for wifi card replacement. Maybe for the antenna? Is it necessary for the AA1? (sorry for bad english)

Re: Usb wifi adapter for OSX?

Hi there everyone, I recently bought an aspire one to mess around with, just a wee gadget so I could try out other operating systems, I've installed OSX and everything was working fine apart from the wireless.

I had a spare Belkin F5D7050 Lying around, Its version 4001uk, I searched and searched and eventually found that it uses the Zydas 1211 chipset, and lo and behold, there are mac drivers for it!

Quick install and they worked first time!

    http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Drivers/Zy ... iver.shtml

Just thought since I'd spent about half an hour searching, I might aswell post it in here :D

Thanks to everyone for the constantly good advice given in this community!

Re: Usb wifi adapter for OSX?

After I restarted there was a ZD utility on the dock, That seems to be the program used to configure my wifi.... from what I can tell, it should've started automatically..

Re: Usb wifi adapter for OSX?

Hmm, could be... I know there was supposed to be an issue with WEP, apparently it was only supposed to work with WPK... but it worked fine for me and i'm using WEP so I assumed it was working... I suppose I shouldnt assume...

Re: Usb wifi adapter for OSX?

I have one of these as well. It is a Realtek 8187L chipset. Get the drivers off Realtek's own web site:

    ftp://210.51.181.211/cn/wlan/87_Mac10.4_v1309.zip
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... e#RTL8187L

I have four of these. It is an RT73-based device from Ralink. The Mac drivers are so-so, and as I said lead to kernel panics when using P2P software. The Windows drivers are solid.

    Mac drivers:
    http://www.ralink.com.tw/Home/Support/Macintosh.html
    http://www.ralink.com.tw/data/drivers/R ... _03_13.dmg

Re: Usb wifi adapter for OSX?

I have a stick based on this chipset as well. It is quite crappy. I had to modify a file inside the driver in order to match the vendor and product ID so that it would be recognised.

I found my drivers here, but they seem to be the same version you pointed to:
    ftp://ftp.zyxeltech.de/ZyDAS/ZD1211_USB/Macintosh/

I do have issues with Bonjour (cf. the end of my iATKOS install guide). Had them via the RJ45 ethernet connection, and have them with my wifi connection too. Any solution, guys?

Only way I can get them to work is using their IP address manually, then its ok until a reboot

I think that an Apple Airport Extreme 802.11n mini-pcie card (you can easily find them on ebay) would be the best choice, right?

The Airport cards are based on a Broadcom chipset, so a Broadcom card works equally fine.

I got the wifi to work with bonjour today just before my screen died on my aspire. i installed from iAtkos with only the bootloader and base system. (read no speed step) bonjour worked perfectly, but i never got a chance to go any further as i rebooted and the screen died.

im swapping it out for a new one first thing in the am tomorrow and will get a good clean install on and hopefully a dual or triple boot write up.
