So i've been tinkering with this, attempting to get the panels to display no background at all (ie, be transparant); but moving the images away simply doesn't work as the panels still show a blue background (all of them). Could I simply replace, say, blue-bk.png with a transparant png?

I finally found a way to create transparent panels on my default desktop. I edited the /usr/share/backgrounds/images/blue-bk.png image, cut out the middle and painted it transparent with KolourPaint. I then save it as /usr/share/backgrounds/images/transparent-bk.png. The I modified group ids 1-4 in group-app.xml to point to this image.

However, the panels are displayed correctly only after using the switch-desktop option to switch out and back again. (see http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=1525)

As far as I can tell, the desktop panels get drawn without restoring the background area to the original backgound, so the the background for transparent images are not predictable.
