When I use certain games, the screen does not completely fill; there are black spaces on both sides and the game screen seems elongated vertically.
Any ideas what I can do to correct this?
    Thanks for any help.

Sounds like the game you're playing is trying to stretch or thin itself to a specific resolution but is struggling to align itself with the resolution of your monitor. Usually games will correct this automatically after a few seconds, but I guess it's not working in your case. Which games are you trying to run that are causing the problem? If you can figure out their native resolution you might be able to puzzle out a proper resolution to set your laptop to before turning a game on.

Might just be a driver issue, as well. Perhaps try downloading the latest drivers for your graphics card and / or monitor.
