Hi, really need advice regarding changing the cpu on my Toshiba Satellite C850 -F117
The original cpu burnt out and I need to replace it. But I can't get the exact same one, I came across a similar one online but I'm not sure if it will work. That's the advice I need.
The cpu on the laptop is a Intel Celeron B816, Socket is FCPGA988
The cpu I wanna purchase is a i5-540m, Sockets supported are BGA1288, PGA988

My question is, will the i5-540m CPU work on my laptop?

    Hi Stan420,
I hope this information helps you in upgrading your CPU.

Here is the original spec's of your Intel Celeron CPU
    http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Celeron_Dual-Core/Intel-Mobile Celeron B815.html

A few pointers to note when upgrading a CPU:
    1. Make sure that you are choosing a CPU that has the same microarchitecture...Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge
    A. You have a Sandy Bridge processor

    2. You will also need to keep in mind the package/pin-count
    A. You have 988

    3. You will need to know the socket
    A. You have Socket G2

This link will show you CPU's that are compatible with Sandy Bridge Microarchitecture, scroll down to Mobile Processors
    http://www.cpu-world.com/Cores/Sandy Bridge.html

Caution when upgrading the CPU, the Wattage and Heat will increase.

Also I have had a look at you laptops specification and you will be able to upgrade your RAM from 2GB too 8GB, this will allow your laptop to handle more work your throw at it. You can achieve this by purchasing 2x4GB DDR3 1333MHz SODIMM
    https://www.laptopdirect.co.za/laptop-specification-sheet.php?laptop=59622

I know the prices are in Australian $, it will give you an indication of how much the RAM and SSD will cost

Alternatively you can go to Crucial and scan you laptop to find the best suited RAM and HDD,SSD for your laptop

    I hope this helps.
