    Hi

Just got my Aspire One and I am total newbie with Linux

I have just tried to create a recovery USB device but ran into a problem almost instantly. I'm using a Dell laptop running Vista. As per the (quite crappy) instructions, I inserted the CD and a 2GB USB flash stick, rebooted the laptop, entered the startup menu and selected to boot from the CD/DVD drive

All went well - the Aspire One logo appeared and I got the menu of options. I selected "Create Recovery USB Drive" and then it all went tits up.

What I can now see on my latop is this:

    finding LiveCD...
/linuxrc: line 1:cd: /proc/ide: No such file or directory
grep: /proc/ide/hd?/media: No such file or directory
I could not find the CD! It is not one of \"$cddev\".
Being desparate, I will sleep for 5 seconds and start again.

Being desparate and open a bash
TuxOnIce: No attempt was made to resume from any image that might exist.
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,2)

"desparate" (sic) by the way, not a typo on my part...

So, help! Like I said, I'm a total novice with Linux and I'm not very techie so this doesn't mean a great deal to me. But it does seem like the CD can't find itself which seems odd

    All suggestions gratefully received

    Hi stu20001,

Please follow my walk through here,
    viewtopic.php?f=17&t=7412

but if this also fails then use Macles second back up method here.
    http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/12/acer ... ackup.html
Please note the Macles method will restore your box to how you had it set up with all your added applications, not to as new out of the box.

I can say that both work perfectly and I used my Macles method system image that I created to retrieve my box after a disastrous Acer update that killed my system, have a look here.
