I am wondering if my 2008 XP Vostro 1700 can be upgraded to take Windows 10 (If I buy a 7 or 8 license)
    Details are:-
    Vostro™ 1700 NB(NO517001)
    Intel® Celeron® Processor 550 (2.00 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2-cache),
    Memory 2048MB (2x1024) 667MHz DDR2 Dual Channel
    Video Card 128MB nVidia® GeForce® 8400M GS
Hard Drive 120GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
Modem 56.6k V.92 Capable Internal Modem & Adapter -UK
Optical Devices Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive including Software
    Wireless Networking Dell™ Wireless 1395 (802.11 b/g) MiniPCI Card

I can't find a new laptop with a disc drive, VGA output for my projector etc; so considering upgrading my faithful Vostro to Windows 10, a new battery pack, and probably a new disc drive if it is Windows 10 compatible.
Is there anything else I should/could upgrade? (New hard drive, increase RAM, a more modern USB port ..... etc??)
    Thanks everyone

Well I hate to be a cynic and a curmudgeon, but when it comes to a Dell Vostro I just have to assume that role. I have one of these for my work computer and I hate the thing, so I am just going to assume that it cannot handle Windows 10 and there will be significant problems. I could very well be wrong, and I hope that I am, but I have just seen so many issues over the past year in dealing with this machine that it would just fall in line with that. Hope that you get good news, though.

When I first saw your thread's topic, I thought it would be fine. Since before my 7-year-old Vostro 1500 died, I actually upgraded it from Windows 7 to Windows 10. It had no problem.

Then again, I saw your specifications. It seems quite... weak. Sorry.
    My Vostro 1500 had Core 2 Duo 2.2GHZ with 4MB L2 cache; 4GB 667MHZ RAM; 512GB SSD; Nvidia 8600GT graphics card... before I upgraded from Win7 to Win10.

I would think it is a bad idea to upgrade to Windows 10 with the hardware setup you have there. Is there a specific reason for the upgrade? If your current OS serves you well, there is no need to fix what's not broken for the unnecessary potential problems.
