Hello. I'm looking to buy gaming laptop with good quality display and fast refresh rate such as 240hz and above. Most of such come with 1080p displays. But I was wondering if there are higher resolution laptops with say 144-165hz refresh rate that can be safely overclocked by lowering resolution?

Sure, here are some gaming laptops with higher resolution displays that can be safely overclocked by lowering resolution:

    • Asus ROG Strix Scar 15. This laptop has a 15.6-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) display with a 165Hz refresh rate. It can be overclocked to 240Hz by lowering the resolution to Full HD (1920 x 1080). The laptop is powered by an Intel Core i7-12700H processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti graphics card.
    • Lenovo Legion 5 Pro. This laptop has a 16-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) display with a 165Hz refresh rate. It can be overclocked to 240Hz by lowering the resolution to Full HD. The laptop is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti graphics card.
    • MSI GE76 Raider. This laptop has a 17.3-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) display with a 165Hz refresh rate. It can be overclocked to 240Hz by lowering the resolution to Full HD. The laptop is powered by an Intel Core i9-12900H processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics card.

Thanks. I'm interested in 17.3" or 18" laptops. Is overclocking possible using official manufacturer software?

Yes! Some gaming laptops with QHD (1440p) or 4K displays support 144-165Hz refresh rates and can be overclocked when lowering resolution. Look for models with Advanced Optimus or MUX switches for better performance. The Razer Blade 16, ASUS ROG Strix Scar 16, and Alienware x16 are great options. Just ensure panel overclocking is supported in the BIOS or GPU settings!
