    Slightly noobish alert:

Being 18, I've never used MS-DOS, so have no idea how to boot into it.

Do I have to install it, or is included in an install of windows?

Does it work on the A110?

MS-DOS is infact a OS. When Windows is installed it is installed through dos. When you make a bootable disk it is in fact a DOS operating system on it.

To be clear clear to your question, yes, If the USB device is bootable.

I've never made a bios update on a linux machine.

I have an USB-Stick, the new Bios and my One.

    But what now?

Just copy the extracted files to the stick and boot from there??

You need to create a MS-DOS bootable pendrive. It's necessary to use another PC with windows(or use Wine in linux but its better to use another pc). Check this guide: http://www.gamebeat.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1057

Once you get the bootable USB, simply copy the BIOS content to it and boot from there and in the MS-DOS prompt type: 3114.BAT to start the updating process with the "in-this-moment" actual bios (v3114)

That procedure there is unnecessarily complicated. Much easier to just download UNetbootin (available for both Linux and Windows), select FreeDOS from the distribution list, and it'll create a bootable DOS stick in automatically. Then just unzip the BIOS files and copy them onto the USB stick, and when you reboot, you'll find them on "c:". Worked like a charm on my One.

    Hi all,

my netbook has been delivered, 20 days before the expected date, and that's pretty much fine...
The Linpus Lite is great, for a common user, fast and simple as it should be, while it's quite easy to tweak it for an addicted geek, But... I've followed your suggestions to update the BIOS via USB key (it was a long time ago when I needed to boot form a floppy disk and at that time it was quite easy to format with /s parameter), using the HP tool, and there's something strange, or at least it looks like that to me.

I have a folder containing the DOS files:
    ANSI.SYS
    CHOICE.COM
    COMMAND.COM
    EMM386.EXE
    HIMEM.SYS
    IO.SYS
    MSCDEX.EXE
    MSDOS.SYS
    OAKCDROM.SYS
    RAMDRIVE.SYS

So I've set the path in order to load the DOS files while formatting (FAT32, 4GB), but once the process has finished, the USB didn't boot as expected, it didn't boot at all. I've checked the USB root and there I've found only 3 files:
    COMMAND.COM
    IO.SYS
    MSDOS.SYS

My guess was that copying there the missing files could solve the problem. I've copied the missing files and now the USB key is booting perfectly.

Now my question: is there anybody that had the same problem?

    Thanks,
    bye.

By the way, Netbootin + FreeDOS didn't work at all. While booting, it's claiming that it "COULD NOT FIND RAMDISK IMAGE: /ubninit". The files is there, but empty.

It's strange but i had (almost) the same issue. My USB-stick had only that 3 files you mention after flashing (I used HP Flas Utility and DOS files too) but it boots correctly, no need to copy the remaining files.

Ok, So after BIOS Crashing during update, my Aspire One is DEAD... its 2 weeks old, so beforeereturnit to the store i contact the European ACER Suport...

    I send the following email:

"Last week i purchase an Acer Aspire One, 8GB SSD Linux. Today i flash the official bios in the Acer FTP to the v3.114, using a bootable Pen drive as advised. During process of it, screen went black. It never turn on again. Everytime i turn PC on, power light goes green, and fan goes on. Nothing more happens.

Please advise in what to do.

    Thank you"

And i got the following answer:

"We would not recommend flashing your BIOS due to the inherent risk of rendering your machine inoperable. We can however repair this for you for an initial charge of £53.13 to assess the unit and send out a quote of how much it will cost to repair the unit.

    Regards
    Sarah
    Acer Technical Support Team"

So... they make available an oficcial BIOS update but advise NOT to use it?...
