    Hi,

It turns out to be remarkably difficult to find any info on how to enable S/PDIF audio output
    on the AOA150.

I have an AOA 150 - Aw, dual boot with XP and Fedora 13 installed.

Even though in the endless spec sheets you can find for it on the net it
says "S/PDIF output" everywhere, there seems to be no documentation
    on how to use/enable it.

For example, the PDF manual on the CD ROM only is the dinky "application manual".

Did anyone get this to work? I have all useful testing cables (TOSLINK adapter, a DAC that
takes optical and coaxial digital input, etc..)

    many thanks,

    Patrick

Alright, one step closer but not close.

    Acer support replies:
"This unit does not spdif digital sound output. All aspire ones have a 3.5mm headphone socket for audio output.
Digital output is through the standard VGA port. "

The bit about VGA is puzzling, probably should ignore that.

From alsa-info I see that the sound chip is a Realtek ALC268, which according
to its specs has S/PDIF output.

    aplay output:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC268 Analog [ALC268 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC268 Digital [ALC268 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

So possibly it's simply not connected to any output?

The chip has the ability to handle S/PDIF but there is no S/PDIF jack and so I doubt there is any electronics other than the chip in the computer to handle S/PDIF let alone any software. Further that portion of the chip may not even have any power to it let alone an output line.

Thanks. Pity that some spec sites are incorrect.
