According to the official specifications you can only have a total of 1.5 GB RAM. I guess the 512 MB and a 2 GB stick will work but only 1.5 GB will be utilized?

Ubuntu can address 4GB on a 32 bit processor, and while I'm no hardware wizard, I bet any restriction (if there really is one) is down to Linpus not the machine itself.

I have to say that more than 1.5GB seems overkill for a little machine like this. I've got 4GB in my MacBook Pro, but I intend to use a spare 512MB SO-DIMM so I'll only have a measly 1GB on mine (when it eventually turns up) and I'm sure that will be plenty.

come on people seriously. anyone managed to put a 2 gig stick in this lappy?
i'm getting mine on the 17th so i will try for sure. i will also install the xp and i don't see why it would not work.
even if the max is 2gb, 2gb is still better then 1.5gb.

unfortunately no. i learned it the hard way. i put a 2 gig stick from my regular acer laptop and after i finally put the laptop together i try to turn in on, the power light comes on but the screen stays black and not even the fan would come on. i shit my self i thought it will beep or something if the memory is not right. so after when i double checked everything i took the 2 gig out and replaced it with 512 (thats the only one i had) it works no problem.

The maximum supported RAM on the motherboard is 1.5 GB.

Ok so this confirms it then, a 1GB stick is the one to buy?

I don't suppose there's any way to disable the on-board memory in BIOS?

    Hello,

Someone in France test with a 2gb stick :
    http://www.aspire-one.net/tutoriels/tut ... /#comments

    It doesn't work with 2gb stick of GSkill DDR2 PC2-5300 (CL5-5-5-15)
    -> black screen, no sound

    :D

    Interesting...

It's kinda funny when you put in the extra 1 GB into the machine the default linux shows 2GB haahha

This won't work because the restriction is on the single slot to 1gb not actually total memory to 1.5gb. This is because the 945 chipset only allows a max of 1gb per slot.

I dont think thats actually true... I think this is simply a 2gb limitation of the platform in some way (see http://www.intel.com/Products/Desktop/M ... erview.htm) for example (that one is a gc not a gse though). However, the eeepc 901 is a gse as well and will support a single 2gb stick.

Having said all that though, the different incarnations of the 945 chipsets have some peculiar limitations. for eg, the 945gm used on many laptops has a 32bit bus so even with a 64bit os and a 64bit cpu, it'll only support 3.something gb of memory because the mapping of devices into memory has to occur with the 32bit limitation (i.e. if you populate these laptops with 4gb of memory, u get 3.2-3.4gb depending on the hardware)

    what about a 1gig stick with a 1gig stock AA1?

that doesn't exceed the limitations of 1gb per slot. will it work?

I believe the 1GB A1's have the same 512MB on-board RAM... they just prepopulate the SODIMM slot with a 512MB stick.

Put in a 2 Gb RAM module, with the same effect:
    Screen stays dark, nothing happens.
It will not take an extra 2 Gb of RAM as it is out of the box.
Will put in an extra 1 Gb now.
Does anybody know what makes this limit ?
    Is it the bios ?

    Hi, I've a Ramaxel 512MB 2Rx16 PC2-4200S-444 LF 533MHz DDR2 SODIMM (#RMN1270LA46D6F-533)
    just like this: [IMG]

    I also have a Kingston 2GB SO-DIMM DDR2 PC2-5300 (RMN2-667/2G).

Do Acer One supports one of there memories? Are they compatible?

    Thanks

The Ramaxel should work. The Kingston will not.

if youre planning a ram upgrade, i recommend you shy away from kingston in this case

otherwise, theyre a fairly reputable manufacturer
