Brand new aspire one - 160gb HD, 1GB Ram, 6-cell, WinXP.

About every 5-10 seconds I hear little clicking noises that seem to coincide with the hard drive activity light. Is this normal or a sign of a defect?

The clicking noises aren't very loud, but they can be a bit annoying. Anyone else hear this?

It is the power saver (head parking mode) of the drive.

For Windows you can use the following.

    http://nodadev.wordpress.com/pc-projects/a1ctl/

It allows control of the fan also (plus a lot of other nice features). Highly recommended.

If you want to check the hard drive health and know exactly what it is doing, check out a program that can read its SMART information. For Linux, that would be the smartmon or ide-smart utilities. It will tell you how and what kind of any failures it had, the hottest its ever been, how many times it started, how many hours its run in its life, etc...
