My question is simple. Is it possible to add applications (like Skype for example) to the "Connect" area? I've already installed Skype, but I wish to have a shortcut right in the "Connect" area to ease of use.

    Thanks for any help given

I suppose you have the Linpus version.

To add/change/remove etc. you have to edit following XML file:
    /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/group-app.xml

    Hi Tybor!

You're right, I have the Linpus version. I will try to have a look at that XML file but as I am a complete neophyte maybe I will try 2-3 times to get it, and then if failed I will wait for a more "user friendly" way... ;)

    Thanks for your help

Thank you so much Tybor! It was completely straight forward and easy...

After opening the XML file this is what I had:

I deleted the exclamation point and the dashes:

    <app sequence="4">/usr/share/applications/skype.desktop</app>

Rebooted and there it was the Skype logo in all its glory in the connect area!

Thank you so much once again Tybor!

    Hi Dale

I've just downloaded from the Skype site the Fedora version and it automatically got installed (there was an option to just save it to the downloads folder). Then I edited the XML file and now I'm good to go... ;)

I've also enabled the "Show Desktop Menu" through the "Advance Mode Hack" as explained here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=28 . But I think that's not necessary to get this to work...

    Cheers, worked a treat.
Where else can I find things that are packed up already to use with the aspire one?

If you have enabled the "Show Desktop Menu" you can access right clicking the desktop a menu and on that menu one of the options is "System", then on System you have add/remove software, clicking on this you will have the possibility to install from a repository some cool stuff to your A1... hehehe

You'll have to take a look at Ubuntu Netbook Edition. It's not yet officially released though.

Thanks Tybor. I edited the xml file so that the sequence of the icons is different. Much more convenient now for me at least.

You can also rearrange the icons in each area just by drag and drop... You must select first the area and then you can alter the sequence of the icons.

Did you save the changes? If so, I'm not sure what went wrong...

Yes and changed the permissions to read-only before the reboot. It just always gets reset.. I'm doing a restore right now, hopefully this will work afterwards.

I made an error in the XML file and that's why it got restored every time..

Is it possible to restart the desktop areas without rebooting?

if someone emailed you their default xml file to replace your error-ridden one with, I expect that would work...
