I just upgraded to the new 3309 BIOS and then installed the acer_ec.pl & acerfand scripts.
The result is quite weird: every 5 seconds the fan start, run for about a second, and then the fan shut down.
Then repeat. And repeat. And repeat.
    Any idea of the cause?

    TIA
    Diego

acerfand isn't built to support the 3309 bios.

You can see my thread here for how to fix it for 3308. For 3309 just change the 3308 strings in my examples to 3309.

I just did this myself when I upgraded from 3308 to 3309.

    Those changes seem fine.

Can you run "sudo perl acer_ec.pl ?= 58" from the command line and see if your getting valid temp readings?

It almost sounds like the readings coming back are invalid causing the fan control to be erratic.

Did you just overwrite your old files with the new ones?

I take it you killed the old acerfand process running and reran it after changing files or at least rebooted after installing the new files?

I have this problem too. I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 a few days ago and upgraded the BIOS from 3304 to 3309 and then tried to install the acerfand script. I ended up just uninstalling acerfand as the fan noise doesn't bother me all that much.

The value reported by "sudo perl acer_ec.pl ?= 58" right now is around 0x28, and it seems a reasonable value.
Still with that value the fan is erratic.

I installed the scripts only after the bios upgrade, so no problem with older versions.
And yes... I killed the process and reboot some times for various tries... always with the same result.

Right now I disabled the acerfand... it's much more annoying the start and stop than the continous run... but still isn't an optimal solution...

I would like to add that ihave exactly the same problem after upgrading my bios to 3308 and updating acerfand. I to disabled acerfand as the switching on and of is quite annoying. Still, I really like a mostly completely silent Aspire One. If there's anything I can do to help...

I have the same problem with Acerfand on 3309 and running Ubuntu 8.10

The temp reported seems fine but the fan goes and and off in a really irritating way. Please help
