Hmm... there seems to be 2 threads on this subject. One in the hardware modding section as well. Wish I had read this one a few days ago.

I also did a test cutting the clock lines to the onboard ram chips to disable communication with them. This resulted in no POST as well.

The other thread has pretty much reached the conclusion that the bios hard codes the timing and capacity of the onboard chips so just disabling the chips won't work.

So a hardware mod does not seem to be an option at all.

    Mech.

I think its not 1.5 GB x 2 but a 1GB & a 2GB Kit. The product press release page is here - http://www.ocztechnology.com/aboutocz/press/2008/293 But if it is 1.5GB indeed, which is a definite impossibility with the current architecture, Please inform us.

your probly right but my order form says:

    OCZ Technology 3GB DDR2 SDRAM Memory Module - 3GB (2 x
    1.5GB) - 667MHz DDR2-667/PC2-5300 - DDR2 SDRAM - SoDIMM

but i'll let yopu know what I end up with, if I get a 2GB and 1GB stick I can always use it somewere else.

Maybe this is a dumb question but my ZG5 shows 1024 MB on my BIOS screen. If I add a 1 Gb SODIMM in the optional slot I should get 2 Gb but users only experience 1536 MB on the BIOS screen. What happens to the other 512k? Is it a hardware limitation or a BIOS limitation?

    just curious

you DONT need more ram, everyone thinks ram makes things faster, look at your taskmgr, if the pagefile is less than half full when u run firefox and photoshop CS2, you have enough ram

Wow man, what ignorance you have...
The less pagefiling there is to do, the faster the computer. Although my pagefile is usually 60% or less, my physical memory is hovering at around 87%-96%.
In this case, you DO need more RAM.

    Hi there,

I have to agree, no matter how empty your pagefile is. Using a pagefile at all will be slower than having enough RAM to not need a pagefile.

The pagefile (also knows as Virtual Memory) is a section on your hard drive which the operating system uses as "RAM" once your physical RAM is full of info.
The average seek time for a 5400RPM hard drive (which is what is in most Netbooks) is about 12 milli-seconds. Which sounds quite fast until you realise that the average seek time for your RAM is about 5 nano-seconds.

    Have a look here for a fuller explanation http://www.experts-exchange.com/article ... rives.html

Basically, the more RAM you can fit in the faster your PC will be!

That 1024 MB means you have the 512 MB that's part of the motherboard, plus a 512MB module already in the slot. To upgrade you'd have to take that 512 out of the slot and put in your 1GB of new RAM.

    All the best,
i seriously hope we hit a BIOS mod, the only mod that's not been achieved on a AOA105,
If this can be achieved it would make an aspire one a super machine !!!
    fingers crossed !!! :ugeek:

The biggest bummer is that this is totally possible if they had just used their original design decision, putting a SPD chip on board. Some of the resources I've found have it called out, but it looks like later revisions of the document have it "removed." There are a few tricks I can try to disable the ram bank from initializing, but since the SPD is (supposedly) hard coded into the BIOS, I still don't know how that'd behave...

I think even if I were to get it to work, the mod would be too difficult to do for 95% of the modders out there :(

Looks like my next week or so is going to be spent learning about BIOS modding... I'm hopeful, but Acer isn't even using a widely popular bios mfgr... sigh.
