I've ordered a new laptop earlier and will collect it a few days later. What should I check about the laptop in addition to surface scratches and dead/light pixels? And how to look up for the dead / light pixels in full screen when there is no internet there??

Before you get it, and before connecting it to the internet download an anti virus program and a anti malware program on to a flash drive both can be found here for free:

    http://www.frewarefiles.com

You can also get a pixel checker from the same site called IsMyLcdOK

Delete MOST OF THE preinstalled trial software, some can spy on you.

Do a SYSTEM BACKUP aomei backupper is a great program

    Download ccleaner same site.

And just have fun with it.

The computer is new and pre-installed with win 8 or win 10 (I forgot which). But isn't it already protected with default firewall ?

No a firewall alone will NOT protect you

Windows 10 has a good antivirus program called defender
built in, you will need others.

Safety should be you first consideration.

You will be able to update to windows 10 for free during the next 11 months
if it comes with windows 8 installed.

Please if you have time read this article
