This is interesting, and I will save the link for the rainy day :) I only know how to turn on, turn off, open browsers, and type! I wish I have taken courses in putting a computer together instead of other useless classes in school!

The courses you have taken will be helping you throughout your life.

A laptop is very different, the parts are mainly soldered, some parts such as the
hard drive ,ram, motherboard battery, wifi unit, keyboard, and lcd screen can be replaced.

Building a desktop computer is quite simple it's like building with meccano

If you can replace a light bulb and use a screwdriver then you could do it.

Years ago it was a little harder you needed to know it's voltage (and use a multiplier)
altering onboard pins etc. Chips on board the motherboards now take the strain.

The hardest was getting the old modems working, all that's gone now.

    Learning software is the hardest.

Many of our members like myself are self taught over many many years.

I started learning even before windows was developed.

I believe that a bad sector in the hard drive can be physical or logical. Logical means there is a problem with the address that was somehow corrupted (the data only). But most bad sectors are due to physical problems. I remember my first hard drive of 70 MB (oh, that was a long time ago). It suffered a bad sector once in a while until such time that the capacity was down to about 66 MB, meaning some tracks are lost permanently.

I would go with @something back that the best is to replace the hard drive.
