I have no wish to discourage the brave individuals who are attempting to create distros specific to our hardware, but I think they are on a hiding to nothing. I haven't investigated linux4one so I would be delighted if my pessimistic attitude is proved wrong but I shan't hold my breath.

There are two fundamental difficulties to creating a specific distro.

Firstly, creating a robust distro is a LOT of work. Even starting with a polished distro like Ubuntu, your choice is either to make almost no changes to the standard distro (in which case, there is no point in doing it) or make major changes and leave yourself with far more work than one person could manage unless (s)he were to be paid to do it full time and even that may not be enough. The chap behind OneLinux quickly found this out in the face of unreasonable expectations (and at times aggressive demands) from would be users.

The second problem is that the main distros work fine as they are except for hardware support. We don't really need a slimmed down distro to run on our machines, the normal "fat" version works fine. Distros like Ubuntu have derivatives, such as Xubuntu, which are tailored to lower power machines. There are even specialist lightweight distros like Puppy and DSL. The problem here is the hardware support. If a particular fix works on the specialist distro, it will work on the parent distro and vice versa.

Consequently, what would be most useful is not a specialist distro but the required changes to support hardware submitted to the relevant distros as fixes and in the meantime, clear instructions in a single place for each distro. The hardware support is the real sticking point here. AFAIK no Linux distro fully supports the hardware apart from Linpus and that situation is unfortunately not likely to change in the near future.

    Very interesting!
How about the updates and patches? Do they work like in the standard ubuntu?
I heard that there was a problem with the netbook remix and updates, but not so sure about this.
I'm downloading the iso now, but any feedback from any of you guys would be great!

Just from reading over the site it sounds just like the UNR image. Based on Hardy too. Maybe there's less having to tweak stuff from the Ubuntu wiki after install? I'm looking forward to what you guys have to say about it. :D

Linux4One is currently in Italian only and is based upon Ubuntu 8.04 with NBR. I have requested that they create an English version or an all language version or suggest how to change ISO to English so I can do it.

I tried to boot up from USB but a message appeared "kernel not found". Should I retry using, say, Unetbootin? Hope other users can help on this.

The problem with the kernal is new to me since no one else has pointed it out...could you perhaps give me few more details on it since the version is currently only in Italian so this is something to keep in mind. From jan 6 though, there will also be an English version available with the following additions: both Card readers fully functional, Open Office 3, Flash 10, audio level in microphone problem solved, various optimizations that will make the system more reactive. In case of any problems or doubts, I remind you to post in the Engl Support sections of the official site: http://www.linux4one.it/forum.

Installed fine for me with unetbootin. So far looks good. Still testing though.

There is a video up at http://www.liliputing.com/2009/01/a...e-fo-the-acer-aspire-one-video.html#more-4278

I tested RC2 this morning and was disappointed; here are my opinions.

    1. Boot is EXTREMELY slow compared to my personal setup (Ubuntu 8.10 UMPC with sickboy kernel, all tweaks, running UNR).

    Tweaked intrepid UMPC+UNR boots in ~35 secs, linux4one RC2 takes ~1:35.

    2. Software bundle is nice. GIMP, vlc, Sun Java 6, etc. already installed.

    3. Wifi did not work out of the box for me. EDIT: Probably would with madwifi-hal, I didn't check what driver l4o was using.

Check the video linked above to see the LOOOONG boot. I didn't try any tweaking to shorten the boot, just went back to Intrepid.

EDIT: the video is not my machine or me running it, just to be clear. Also, left cardreader worked OOTB.

The video was filmed based on an extremely slow HD..The boot time is around 55 sec; it's the first time I hear of such a slow boot time so could you give me a bit more details regarding what SSD you're using, if you did it through cable or battery? As far as the wifi is concerend, it's fully functioning after you've installed the distribution and rebooted. Nevertheless, this isn't the final distribution so I would be grateful if other users as well could send me boot times. FYI, even if the led isn't working, the switch is so perhaps it was simply on OFF. I thank you and everyone else for any feedback received that will help me better the distribution.

I have the slower Intel SSD.

Boot times and wifi were probably affected by the fact I ran it as live USB using unetbootin.

i did the full install (on SSD) ... my boot time improved wich each reboot .. still not as good as linpus. but well under 1:35
i'll use the stopwatch in my next try

never got online with the WiFi.
very frustrating the card is there it gets recognized, i can configure it, but i can never make a connection(???)

(i just hope i'm doing something wrong and if i look at it again tomorrow i will just realize what i did wrong, dig a hole and hide away in shame but too late now will try again tomorrow.)

On the bright side; (finally) made a backup with AA1Backup v1.1 and backup and restore went very smooth!

    N.b.
after restoring Linpus i had to use the (hardware) wifi switch to switch the card on before i could connect
thats funny i never have to use in linpus
as said before.... Need to Sleep, i'll give another try tomorrow

    Reporting back as promised

    I got WiFI working!!!

It took a few reboots ( i got a few very non-informative gnome message that: "something went wrong" a bit like one of those hated MS error statements)

some fiddling with that awful WiFI switch (is the WIFI off by default? or is the WiFI (sometimes?) timing out during boot?)

    But it's up and running!!!
(I hope they get that WiFI LED working soon)

Internal Microphone is working in Skype (my big wish for X-Mas, they made it happen thx, thx, thx,)

Both SD slots up and running!! (inserted them after boot up.. have to test what happens when the are inserted before boot)

My Microsoft wireless (USB) mouse up and Running

Need some coffee now to celebrate and i'm a bit afraid to reboot ;) Will get back later and post timings for boot up

KUDOS to the guys from http://www.linux4one.it
