Re: iAtkos v5i Install and Issues Full guide now complete

I am going to upgrade my machine with the dell wifi card, more ram and bigger hd, but I only want to open my case once so I am just waiting for the wifi card to get here. I plan on doing a dual boot xp/osx system and wanted to know which OS I should install first....If there is a preference at all? I downloaded the unofficial recovery disc off the forums. Any hints or tips would be appreciated. Thank you.

Great guide Rory!! Currently duel booting my Aspire One with Windows XP SP3 Home and Leopard. Your guide was a great help in getting there...

    Currently doing a little experiment....

I play World Of Warcraft and get 7-11 (max 15-17) fps under the game in windows on the AA1...
Currently installing it natively on the 'Mac' side... Will report back here with my performance/findings!!

    ;-))

My 1390 card is on its way from Ebay to complete the hardware setup!

    Thanks rory!

The voodoo kernal worked. My girls now have OS x on their AAO's for xmas! (they use my MacBook Pro) :ugeek:

Just put iatkos back in and only select the voodoo kernal in the customise section of install

    I wrote last night...

    >Currently doing a little experiment....

    >I play World Of Warcraft and get 7-11 (max 15-17) fps under the game in windows on the AA1...
    >Currently installing it natively on the 'Mac' side... Will report back here with my performance/findings!!

Well... It took hours to install from about 10 disks in total plus 700 megabytes of updates... but I succeeded in the end..

I now have WOW running under OS X (Voodoo Kernel, Rory's guide) and can report back my findings...

    OK deep breath....

Performance of WOW under OS X (native) is ALMOST EXACTLY the same as native performance of said game under Windows XP SP3 on the same machine!

There!! It might even be a touch faster but if it is not by much.. 1 fps or so..

This game requires a lot of resources and is quite taxing - I have been very impressed with what the Blizzard engineers have done with this game across multiple OS platforms.

To my mind this tells me that both native executables and drivers on both OS's are highly optimised!!

I get about 13-15 fps on average under OS X... (outlands). 15-20 fps in Azeroth - the game fps does vary a lot though just by design, depending on where you are..
Lowest fps is about 7 or 8 - same as I got under XP.

playable - yes... happy - yes...

All I can say to summarize is choose your OS - Windows OR Leopard - the game runs almost exactly the same on both OS's on the Acer Aspire One!

Hope that helped someone.. It's a powerfull little beast...

Test system - Stock 1GB RAM, 120GB HD Acer Aspire One 150 model. External CD/DVD USB Drive.
WOW - Wrath Of Lich King, Windows XP SP3 Home, MAC OS X Leopard.

I sometimes get an odd buzzing noise through the speakers. Is there any fix for this?

Thanks for the guide Rory. :) Installed OSX without a hitch. (used the voodoo kernel btw & have Dell 1390 wifi). Performance is much better than I expected!

I installed XP first on 60GB partition and left the rest unallocated. After XP was installed I booted up a partition manager from Hiren's boot disk and created a Fat32 partition for OSX (thinking about it, you could just use the disk management in XP to do all this). When installing OSX, format the partition as "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)" in disk utility then you should be good to install OSX. After OSX is installed you'll have the Darwin bootloader for selecting which OS you want. I also installed Ubuntu 8.10 afterwards and now use GRUB bootloader to manage the 3 OS's.

I found that I needed to reduce the Input Volume for the Microphone in System Preferences>Sound>Input.

The voodoo kernel is in customize in the iatkos installation disk.

Just noticed a problem with the speedstep fix.....

If the system is running at anything lower than 1600mHz, the system clock actually runs fast. This is VERY obvious if you happen to open Date & Time, then select custom clock of 800mHz. You'll notice that the second hand goes double speed.

Unless this thing has the ability to speed up time..... ;)

So any ideas how I could remove the speedstep fix?

So is it the combination of voodoo and speedstep? I never paid attention to the clock when I had only voodoo on.
