It's linux-based, no indication it will support any Windows applications, so the usual compatibility issue. Also a question of how good its support for peripheral devices will be, and how complete a feature package will be offered. I've basically set up Chrome browser as my all-Google maps, apps and video gateway on XP, don't see what the OS will add.

I personally have zero interest in cloud computing. Especially at the consumer level. Cloud computing may have merit for some businesses but not consumers. All this will do is create a captive audience that provides them with monopolistic like powers. Just because it's from Google doesn't make it great.

I'm sure I'll mess around with it when it comes out. If it's truly a cloud based system, I'll pass though.

If Chrome OS is indeed another Linux distribution, and if it performs well on low-end hardware such as a netbook, I'll be very interested. It's ironic how bloated Linux has become; my first hard disk, which seemed enormous at the time (1985) offered me 10mb of storage, which was more than enough for both the Mac OS and all my files. 15 years later, Linux barely fits in 4gb. Ubuntu on my D150 is neither faster nor slower than Windows XP at most tasks, but I would love it if Chrome OS ran twice as fast, while offering comparable functionality.

I find the Chrome browser runs very quickly & is a nice browser to use for the few sites that don't work with Firefox.

The Vista OS from Microsoft is simply dreadful & is the type of product that only a near monopoly could get away with serving up.

In the interests of competition & better OS, I really hope Google succeed & force Mr Gates to get his act together.

Vista and Office 2007 seem to reflect a moment of collective insanity at Microsoft. The one thing you can usually count on from Redmond is that they learn (sort of) from their mistakes. That said, Office 2007 for Windows/Vista isn't nearly as consistent across apps as Office 2008 for MacOS or OpenOffice 3.1. They've only had 15 or 20 years to get their act together.

I just installed the latest "unstable" release of Chromium for Ubuntu. It certainly is fast, and imported my FF3 bookmarks. Very nice.

Actually, since Chrome OS hasn't been released, it's probably just the Chrome browser, that works quite well on XP. Big question is whether the new Linux-based Chrome OS is going to add much other than "Google-appeal" to differentiate it from any other Linux OS running the browser. I have read that Google intends to open the code for the OS to the open source community, so it won't be a proprietary black box.

He is right, it is another version of Linux. But a version created for small netbooks and lap tops for those the have them for Internet use, not work at the office. Both Windows and the original Linux were created prior to the wide spread use of the Internet. What I like to call the industrial age, not the personal wireless electronic age.

That says nothing at all about Google Chrome OS.

I certainly will give a try to the Chrome O/S. I switched to the Chrome Browser from IE to FireFox to Chrome and I am better satisfied with Chrome. Right now, I run TinyXP as O/S. But since I heard that Chrome will be an O/S that would run off the web and since that the primary function of my netbook is to have a web base wireless station, I think that Chrome is what I need. Anyway, it is a second PC experimenting ground so you can always reformat and reinstall. At 8Gb, it is a piece of cake.

im not sure if i'd completely switch over. I'd try Google OS and if their support for HQ (aka hulu, HD youtube, etc.) flash and such is better than how xp is running for me right now then I might consider.
