    Re: Acer Aspire One 11.6" £379 pre-order

379 works out to be around 700 AUD thats a very good price considering that the new 10" acers are currently around $700 here in Australia!

i might have to get me one of these!

That would be $665 Canadian. Not cheap considering the 10.1" ones go for $399 here.

    751 spotten in the wild

Just saw one of these at my local Wal Mart in the States. Guy said it was $398 but I don't think he knew what he was talking about--had it confused with the other Acer Aspire One (10"). From the look of it, a great screen, much improved "chiclet" keyboard (like Apple's) that is a lot wider than the 10". Did not lay hands on, but looked good. Interestingly, the 751 did not seem to be much bigger than the 10" model. Finish typical (good) Acer. I may go back later since I can't find it online anywhere. I assumed it had the same internals as the 10" thoughthat appears not the case. Oh yeah, larger touchpad, too.

Of course, since I got home I read a few reviews and they are universally negative about keyboard feel, screen sturdiness, speed of processor, need for 6 cell battery. Here and I was thinking the 751 might be a significant upgrade of 10" while staying in or close to netbook form factor.

If you find anything positive about it, or get a hands on (I didn't) please advise.

I had one in my hands to buy today at Walmart...turns out their computer told them they couldn't sell it though, and it was accidentally on the shelves. Hopefully you have better luck than I did...this was the only walmart in my general area that had any in stock (and they had just a single one). I'll say, though, $400 seems right, the price tag on the box I had was 398 I think...or 396 or whatever their weird numbering system is. :p Also of note, seems the Walmart version is 250gb HD and Vista (I think). I have one that should arrive Monday, though, I got on Ebay....I'll put up a review then.

    Re: Acer Aspire One 11.6" £379 pre-order

VERY eager to get a report from a user. I tend to trust the reviews, but some of the complaints seemed questionable. That the Intel chip used is 1.33 vs the aton 1.6 makes a lot of difference for common uses? Dunno. I can imagine that the keyboard could feel less good than the 10.2", but would want to see for myself. And the flimsy screen complaint didn't seem to make a lot of difference to me--I don't do much with screen except open and close it.

Please post asap. I'm going to make trip to WM tomorrow and my try to buy one (they had 4 or 5 but they all seemed to be blue--strange).

    Re: Acer Aspire One 11.6" £379 pre-order

Like Hamsterhead, I tried to buy the 11.6" 751 at WalMart today (Sunday 5/17). All went well until we got to the checkout register and the guy scanned the barcode. Then the register started screaming and somebodyhad to be called and eventually I was told it was "on recall" and they could not sell it. The manager type told the guy waiting on me that they'd "better get it off the shelves and out of the display case." They had 3 of them, two blue and one black (I believe), and the price was $398 for the Vista Basic model with 250 GB hard drive and 2 G ram. I looked carefully at keyboard in display case and teh keys are HUGE by comparison with the 10.2" model, but I repeat that the overall machine does not seem to be that much larger. I began to think that the reviews I'd seen my not be complaining about anything I cared about.

Would like to find out what folks think about the two different Atom processors.

Also, does anyone know when these are supposed to be offer on sale here in the states? Are they already on sale in the UK?

I also would like to know the difference in the 2 processors.

My brother just went to Wal-Mart and they had 3 of them, but when he tried to checkout it wouldn't let him buy it. I figured it was an issue yesterday (Sunday) because I thought the official release date is today, but even today the Wal-Mart cash registers aren't letting people buy them, very strange!

June 5th--WalMart had 'em but still no can sell

I was in WalMart tonight and spotted the 751s back in the computer case, so naturally I tried again to buy one. Two weeks ago the cash register refused to sell it and the person said it must be a recall. Since then they were taken out of the case and I hadn't seen 'em until tonight.

When I tried to buy tonight (at $398) same story all over again. Nobody knew anything. Took it to register. Register balked. Then they told me they could sell it.

    What gives with this?

How many hours are you getting. I get a good 7. It also depends on what is running while you are on battery power.

    EDIT

I have to ask, which battery you using? How many hours are you actually getting? My 6 cell working its tits off will yield 6+ hours.

    The power hungry battery drainers are;

    CPU
    HDD
    Screen brightness
    Wireless
    Bluetooth

    My 6 cell on Windows 7 with all the eye candy on and gadgets (which chews more watts than XP) with the following config gives me 6+ hours regularly;

CPU - On 'High Performance' setting
HDD - Works hard as its never just resting
    Screen brightness - Medium
Wireless - On and active (Windows Live & Email)
    Bluetooth - Off

With XP and a conservative setup 7-8 hours should be easy to get...

If you have a 6 cell and still struggle, the battery may be stuffed...

Re: Acer Aspire One 11.6" £319

I got my 6-cell from Comet for £299 2 weeks ago.

Not one lock up in 2 weeks and easily 7 hours battery life. I'm delighted with it.
