I am looking for at least a 30GB drive to replace my 8GB SSD. I know that iPods and Zunes and a few other devices like these use the Toshiba 1.8" ZIF drives, I am very familiar with them, but I want to know where most people here are buying these from and how much they are spending.

I've also read opposing statements that the *GAH drives (8mm height) fit without modification. The *GAH drives are dual-platter compared to the *GAL drives which are single and thus thinner (5mm height). I don't want to modify my One but I don't want to limit my searches to just GAL drives if indeed GAH drives do fit.

I sold the 80GB drive from my iPod Classic for $120 shipped and at the time, 30GB drives were going for around $20 to $30. Now they seem to be closer to $40 or $50. How much did you spend on your MK3008GL drive?

Should I buy a non-working 30GB iPod Photo which hopefully has a functioning hard drive to replace my 8GB SSD? Locally, I can buy one for $20. From research I believe it is a MK3006GAL Toshiba drive.

I ended up buying a Toshiba MK3008GAL on ebay for $40 shipped. 30 day warranty made me feel more comfortable than buying a broken iPod for $20 that may have a bad hard drive.

There have been quite a number of people who have swapped the 8GB SSD for this exact drive. There are a lot of postings on this forum that indicate this, just do a search for "MK3008GAL" and you'll find your answer.

I haven't actually received my drive; I just paid for it on the weekend and it's being shipping from Hong Kong so I expect it to arrive in a couple weeks.

The maximun capacity of this HD are 30GB or exsist one with more capacity? I think 30GB its fine but much GB is better.
    What OS you are running?

The reason this drive is popular is because it is used in the iPod Video, original Zune and Creative Zen Vision M so there are a lot available. You can get single-platter (*GAL) Toshiba drives in 10GB, 20GB, 30GB, 40GB, 60GB and 80GB sizes. The current models are 40, 60 and 80GB drives so anything smaller are older drives.

There are also dual-platter drives (*GAH) which are slightly thicker, 8mm vs 5mm and some people have gotten these to fit in the Aspire One but some people claim that you have to modify the casing to get them to fit because they're thicker. You can get these GAH drives in any number of sizes at least up to 160GB. Hitachi also makes 1.8" ZIF drives but I'm not as familiar with them as the Toshiba drives.

I put Windows Media Center 2005 on my One; once I get my 30GB drive I'll be installing Vista instead.

    I read the
on one posts of this forum and tells that the hard disk drive is 2.5" 9.5 mm and this Toshiba MK3008GAL is 1.8" whats the diference.

That is for the hard drive model of the Aspire One. It uses a 2.5" SATA drive. The SSD Aspire One doesn't have the SATA connector on the motheboard (although it has the solder points) so you can't directly connect a 2.5" drive in the SSD One. The case is slightly different between the hard drive model and SSD model to allow the larger hard drive to fit.

The 1.8" ZIF drives that can be used to replace the SSD drive are small enough to fit in the existing space within the SSD One. Like I said before though, getting a dual-platter 1.8" drive may mean some modifying to get it to fit.

No modification neccessary although you may want to attach some sort of double-sided foam tape so that you can secure the hard drive under the motherboard. The existing cable for the SSD can be used to connect the MK3008GAL drive.
